How to Handle Adult Dyslexia in the Workplace

If you run a business, then the odds are that you might have a person in your business who is dyslexic. This is important to know because about five percent of the population has some form of dyslexia. Handling adult dyslexia in the workplace does not have to be too difficult however.

The first thing for handling dyslexia that you should be aware of involves understanding the initial signs of dyslexia. These signs include an inability to write properly, difficulty in reading and finding demonstrations and hands on activities easier to do than that of written ones. In actual fact, you should know that adult dyslexics can be as intelligent as normal people but are unable to fully display that intelligence in the more conventional ways.

You should look into anti-discrimination laws in your field of work as well. Handling dyslexia should be something that involves care for the person who has dyslexia. Therefore, you should remember to be sure that you have the dyslexic person equal to everyone else according to laws that your field of work has placed. Depending on the country the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Australia) or Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (United Kingdom) should be used.

Counseling is one of the best things to do for dyslexic people in your workplace. This is important because by using counseling you will be able to help find the problem that is underlying in your employees so that you can find out what needs to be done in terms of education. Every dyslexic person will need one's own personalized learning program to help handle the signs of dyslexia that one has.

One of the main concerns to use for handling dyslexia is to not label anyone in the workplace. That's because when a person is labeled it can be easy for that person to feel inferior to others in that the person is forced to work away from others and therefore always feel different. Further, judgments could be passed between coworkers who might not fully understand the plight of the dyslexic worker.

The last of the tips to use for handling dyslexia in the workplace is to consult organizations that work with dyslexic people and provide them with assistance. There are various different groups that deal with people who are dyslexic and support groups for those who are dyslexic that you should definitely contact for assistance. It is best to check online for groups in your area, as there are far too many of them around the world to mention here.

Handling adult dyslexia in the workplace is an important issue to be dealt with. Adult dyslexia is indeed a problem in society, and a dyslexic person in your workplace could end up hurting your bottom line unless you effectively do something about it. Therefore, be sure to always consult your antidiscrimination laws and local dyslexia groups for assistance and to use counseling for helping those in your workplace who might be affected by this problem.
